Using an Extracellular Matrix for Pericardial Reconstruction to Improve Patient Outcomes.

The RECON Study has demonstrated that using ECM for pericardial closure can impact the incidence rate of the postoperative complications for cardiac surgery patients.

The primary goal for surgeons is to make patient care more predictable and provide better outcomes for patients. That could mean fewer complications, decreased hospital visits, or a multitude of other factors, all aimed at keeping patients happy and healthy.

From 2014 to 2017, the RECON Study measured the outcomes of over 1,400 cardiac surgery patients across the country. It focused on patients undergoing CABG (Coronary Artery Bypass Graft) and valve repair/replacement surgeries after having a pericardial closure using extracellular matrix (ECM).

Data from the RECON study demonstrated that pericardial closure with ECM following cardiac surgery is associated with a reduction in postoperative complications, which can lead to better outcomes for patients.
